This shaft, part number 251 711 271D, connects to the shifter and has the guide ears that engage with the shift box on 83-92 Vanagon 2wd models with watercooled engines from 1/83 and on.

The most common fault that happens with these is the urethane shift guide ears crack and brake off. When this happens the shifter looses stability and it's harder to locate gears. It's important to fix this as soon as possible because the metal to metal contact will wear out the shift rod and the guide in the shift box. To replace the shift guide ears get the SHIFT-HE-4SPD
